Stability assessment of the Farrokhi earth embankment dam using the pseudo-static and deformation based methods

Authors

Abstract:

The behavior of earth dams has particular complexities against dynamic forces and its assessment requiresdetailed and scientific analysis. The Farrokhi earth dam is a heterogeneous type with vertical clay core, built 150 km away from Birjand and 41 km away from Qaen on the Farrokhi River. There are concernsregarding the stability of this dam in the event of a future severe earthquake especially because of itsplacement near the active faults of eastern Iran, a very active seismic area in the country. In this study, thepseudo-static analysis, sliding block model and Singh et al empirical relationships were adopted to evaluate safety of the Farrokhi dam against the design earthquake. Based on the findings of the present study, thestability of the Farrokhi earth dam is not guaranteed and as such, small to large size slope failures are expected especially in the upstream side. The pseudo-static analysis and the Singh et al empirical relationships revealed similar conclusions about the stability condition of this dam, while the sliding block method underestimated the earthquake related deformations.

assessment of the efficiency of s.p.g.c refineries using network dea

data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...

Evaluation of slope stability in static and pseudo-static earth dam using software Gio Studio and Plaxis (Case Study dam Kaboodval)

The seepage and slope stability are very important and necessary in the dam dirt are, therefore, in this context, numerous applications to predict and calculate the rate of leakage has been prepared that than the experimental time and cost savings for the analysis of liquids before construction of earth dams need. In this study, safety factors for slope stability software Kaboodwal  plaxis two-...

Static and Pseudo Static Study of Stress and Displacement of Earth-Fill Dam Using Layered and Single-Layer Models

Earth-fill dams stability in steady state seepage condition is very important, especially during earthquakes. Numerical software analyses require accurate and realistic modeling of construction stages. Since earth-fill dams are constructed in different layers, so these conditions should be considered in software modeling to achieve a reasonable design. In this study, an earth-fill dam is modele...

Deformation Performance of the Karkheh Earth Dam with Mixed and Pure Clay Coreunder Seismic Excitations

The number of constructed dams has been largely increased due to high demands of water supplies, and earth dams are the most common types since they are more compatible to the environment. Nevertheless, the stability of these important structures during earthquakes has to be carefully evaluated and guaranteed. In the past, earth dams usually designed with pure clay core, but in recent decades t...
